7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to full product?

Yes I do feel that my work has improve from my preliminary task that I should take my time with Photoshop and use trial and error to get the best out of my work. I should also learn how to take in feedback and learn to apply it to my work and do more market research. I feel that i used my entire tool wisely and it hep and shows in my work. I feel over the course of my making this music magazine it shows now I improved with my Photoshop skills and my blogging skills shown in my first tasks. As I did start to experiment with my Photoshop skills I started to get more confident with my skills and started to take more risks with my work and added different effect which I didn’t know how to use before.

I also feel that i did develop my skills of taking information and applying it to my work for the whole task. I feel that they way that I have applied information from different hip hop magazines and other types of magazines was every good that is why my magazine is a high bread magazine.

I also made sure that my magazine stayed with a house style so that I can still keep with the hip hop style. I feel that I also improved my design skills and how to put image together for example my double page spread, this shows how i put images together and how I i can cut out images and blended to images together.

I feel i also develop my photo taking skills because I learn how to take pictures for different angles and how to change the viewing of the images and how to make them clear and more blurry with just the camera. These help my magazine images and gave me more of a wider choice of images to pick from.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When I started this course I wasn’t the best at photo shop so I had to develop on my skills to get a better result for my magazine, and example of my bad photo shop skills was my preliminary task I didn’t know how to add many affect to my image so my image was very basic and plan. I also made my image black and white which wasn’t good because I lost marks for colour. However I did learn how to use photo shop in my free time so that my main task could be better. I learnt how to add different affect and how they work on my image and how it could improve my image. I feel my photo shop skills have improved and are shows in my new main task work and my drafts of it before.

feel that the camera I used which was the FufiFilm FinePix S1500 helped me capture all the images in the way I wanted to get them, and example of this is when I wasn’t to have a focus shot of Skylark hand and make the face look blurred which i managed to do with the camera I used. Also the camera had a quality lends which made my pictures more clear and easy to edit.

To edit my images I used Photo Shop CS3 and CS5 to add effects and different fonts to my work. This helps my work because it helped me edit and change my work actually and how I wanted it to look, and example of this could of been my font cover which I made on Photoshop, it show now I added font to the page, a image in the corner and also blur the image to add an effect. I feel that both facts will helped my work develop and come out how I wanted it to.

 

5. How did you attract/address you audience?

I feel that my magazine four pages will be able to attract readers because of the design and the layout of my magazine. Because I based my magazine on to worldwide hip hop magazines I will that my magazine will appeal to hip hop magazine. I feel that my magazine will appeal to my main audience but also feel that it could appeal to people out side of my target audience because of the house style I used for my magazine. I feel that my front cover it a good example of this because of the tag line which is “love of music” this shows that not only hip hop reader can read the magazine it does appeal to everyone. Also my contents page is every different and I got it idea from a fashion edition of Vibes magazine so that it can appeal to fashion reader can also relate to them.  The use of one cover on the contents page is very different from normal hip hop magazine so it will appeal to more people.

Also the font size of the contents pages it clear and is a dark black so it is easier for the reader to understand it. My double page spread uses the same colours as the whole magazine which shows the house style that I’m trying to comply with the house style.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

A typical reader of my magazine is a person age 11+ who like mainstream and underground hip hop music. The reader music must like the mainstream music which is artist that appeal to the masses and will sell out tours and also the young new upcoming act that just need a help to make it into the mainstream. Their music may not appeal to the masses but will appeal to hard core hip hop fans. The reader must also be willing to buy albums and listen to different artist and different genres.

The artist that my magazine are Jay-Z, Giggs, Skylark and also artist from different genres like Katy B, Ed Sheeran and N-Dubz. My magazine will also have much different advertisement in the magazine from different company such as JD, Super dry, Apple and Hugo Boss. This could also help my magazine appeal to more people because of the advertisement inside of it.      

   

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I feel that Matt Mason will be the perfect person to distribute my magazine because of his understanding about music. He also has a magazine called “RWD Magazine” which is a UK underground magazine which normally has articles about unknown unban artist who are trying to break into the mainstream. The magazine also keeps a good relationship with the artist they use in the magazine which will mean that they want to come back for more interviews. I feel that we share similar ideas on music because we both respect new artist trying to come up but also respect artist that made it that haven’t forgotten were they came from. He also knows that the UK rap scene doesn’t have a good magazine so he will help me distribute my magazine.

2. How does you media product represent particular social groups?

The main social groups I wanted my magazine to meet were hip hop fans which I felt that I met. I feel that my magazine will appeal to all genders because I will make sure there is articles around female artist as well as male, this is also because hip hop is a very universal genre. I also feel that the magazine will appeal to all ages because there wouldn’t be any strong language or indecent pictures in the magazine so that younger reader can read it. Also I will also make sure that I have old and new artist in the magazine so that all readers can read the magazine.  An example could me my magazine I have a well-known artist on the front but on the side I have articles about new and upcoming artist.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I feel that my magazine look like a professional magazine because I based my magazine on to different hip hop magazines which were Vibe magazine and the Scours magazine. The font style are similar because there all bold and clear design. I also I have the one image on the front which has the artist in a pose showing there in power, this is how most hip hop magazines look like because they want the reader to feel that the artist is in power, in my magazine my artist “Skylark” has his foot on the globe and is looking up at the camera which a bird’s eye view shot which shows he is in power. It also falls into the modern conventions like a free download on the front and columns on of the headings on the front. Also the two colour scheme is also conventions of a hip hop magazine and plus because the colours were different is makes it easier to read.  

Double Page Spread

When making my double page spread I used ideas from the Vibes magazine The Source Magazine and the Clash Magazine.  I’m my daft attempts I used many different ideas from many different magazine genres such as rock and pop, this will help my magazine to be more versatile and will appeal to more people. I made sure I kept the same colours as the front cover so I kept to the house style of a typical magazine. I also used a wide range or images and shot range to make each shot as equine as each other.  I also have wide range of questions which I had to cut down on to get the best question for my interview. I also have a brief introduction to my interview to help copy the house style idea.

My contents page was based on Kayne west Vibes magazine contents because it very different form a normal hip hop magazine contents page. I feel that the will help widen my audience because people will know that my magazine is not a normal hip hop magazine can appeal to everyone. I feel that this will help my magazine appeal to the masses if I show that it different form normal magazines. I got feedback from my target audience asking it this will help my magazine attract a wider range of people and 70% of my target market said yes to it, this will help me get more readers for my magazine.

Market Research

I decided to change the design of my main cover to see how people would take to it. I wanted to see if I can get better feedback of the new image I’m made. I made the front of the title bigger so it stands out from the rest of the headings. Also i re arranged the word on the page so that there is more space and makes it easier to read. I also made the image more clear and took of the blur effect on it. To get the proper feedback on my work i asked for feedback from 30 different people to get there reaction.

I found out that more people liked my new design more than the first one because of the change of layout and because the writing is clear.  Also because time image it not blurred so is easier to look at.

I had two different covers for my magazine and I didn’t know which cover to use so I did a survey in my college and asked 35 people for there option about the two covers.

The feedback from there survey was very good. I found out that 50% of the people want me to use the grey background because they felt that it was more natural then the white background. However people also said that the white background was more professional. And the people that didn’t know are because they like both covers. I will choose to use the first cover because more people liked it. People also said that the font for the first magazine is clearer then on the second one and felt it was easier to read.

I made my first two cover for my magazine the flow. I based the design of my two covers on a The Source magazine cover of “The Game” because I felt this was a very good image and design and i felt t would be perfect for my Hip-Hop magazine. I made two because I feel that it will give people more of a choice for the people. The first cover is more natural because I didn’t use photo shop as much as I did in the second one.  The font for the first magazine is bolder and stands out more, for the second magazine the cover image I used more Photoshop to cut out the artist and to make him lighter.  The font I used was more smaller the first magazine I feel that the second cover is more formal the first but it get a better verdicts I’m going to do a survey to get other peoples option.

I did market research on my title to find out what people think is the best title for my magazine front cover. I had three different designs that I felt that was the best for my magazine. Most people felt that the first design because it was the most formal for a magazine. The other two were too informal and would be better for an image or younger readers. I also got feedback on my tagline to find out which one is the best design. I found out that my first design was the most attractive to people because it was different.

My main page was based on the Source Magazine cover of The Game. I feel that the main heading used was very powerful and was place in a good position. I feel that the colours used were very different so it comes out clear and makes it easy to read. I feel that I should base my cover on this. I hope that my final cover will come out as good as the “The Source Magazine Cover”

Evaluation Photo’s

I feel that my photos that I took have a lot of variation.  I feel that my shots are very good because of mu use of different camera angles and different setting and backgrounds. I took all 57 pictures and feel all would be good enough for my magazine. Because of my different uses of range such as close ups, med shots, long range and bird’s eye view I feel that all the images are different from the last picture.  Because of my background research I did using different Hip Hop magazine and different music magazines I feel that I go the best images and the most variation. I also made sure the lighting was prefect so that the pictures taking will be very clear.

I feel that the way I could on improve on my work is by using different mise ne scene so that my pictures have more variation. It will also make it easier to pick different picture for my double page spread. Also it will give me more of a choice when picking pictures.

Question Research

When I was looking to make my interview questions I looked at two different magazine which were “Rock Sound” and “Vibes” magazine. The interviews were very similar because of the questions the magazines asked, however the format that the magazines used were very different.  All the questions were very basic and easy for the artist to answer. Most of the questions have 20 to 25 questions that will come from a wide range of questions talking about the artist’s current life, past life and what they have planned for the future. There could be fun questions that could be interesting for the readers.

Gratification Theory

The social needs of a reader reading Vibes magazine is a hard core hip hop fans who still like other genres. Also a need of a reader would like to read interesting and detailed article with mainstream artist and also underground artist for example an article with an upcoming artist Drake then an interview with Jay-Z who was the best rapper. People may not like the artist but will like to see how they go into music and what their plans are. The magazine will also promote different hip hop and rap events such as the BET awards and different artist tours such as Lil Wayne’s I’m music tour. Most of the magazine will have advertised different social, fashionable and technical products that there readers could like for example TV shows like 106 And Park clothing line like roc wear and new I pads and laptops. The reader is looking to widen their view on hip hop so they will be look to find news about the hip hop world and find out thing that happen in the past that helps build the genre. The magazine is the prefect guide for all hard core hip hop fans the really enjoy the lifestyle that comes with the music.

The typical reader is hip hop listener that like either mainstream hip hop or unground grime more new artist. The age range of the reader doesn’t matter because Hip Hop appeals to all ages. Also the gender of the reader doesn’t matter because is appeal to everyone but I feel that more man will be attracted to the magazine because there is more men in Hip Hop.

My Magazine

I have chosen to do a hip hop magazine, this is because of my love of music and hip hop. I researched three of the world most know hip hop magazines which was “Vibe”, “The Source” and “Rewind”. I feel that these magazines will help me find the right inspiration to design my magazine. I also have a range of names for my magazine such as “Flow”, “Swag” and “Remix”. I will pick a name before I start planning the magazine.  The target market is all hip hop fans interested in mainstream and underground music, this will main my magazine reaches a wider range of people.

Him fixing up his suit shows that he is fixing up and getting ready to go. Also he is not smiling shows that he is not playing games.

 This is a double page spread about then new artist Drake. The magazine start with is typical drop cap which the magazine normally does. The body of the text doesn’t follow a typical magazine conventional font because Vibe magazine normally appeal to young and the new generation and doesn’t conform to a sans- serif article, this mean is doesn’t follow a typical house magazine format. I feel that the magazine used Drake because he is a new modern artist and that is the same as what sans-serif text delivers, so they feed off each other giving the greatest overall effect.   

On the second page the article is split into three different columns which do follow a typical magazine article. A baseline is used which means each column finishes in line each other. This help the article look consistent and make is easier to follow.  The mise-en-scene of the image is typical Hip Hop artists were Drake is wearing headphones in studio, however the image on the left breaks the stereotype of the genre were Drake is wearing casual Clothes with no Bling or on guns, this shows that Drake is trying to be a different type of artist.

I got my feedback from preliminary task from the teacher. I will use the feedback to help me with my music magazine. Frist my teacher said I should have used colour in my image so that is more symbolic because the image would be clearer than in black and white. Then he said I should have made my image clearer. He also said that it wouldn’t be good enough for a magazine because of the font and the image used. For my magazine I will use colour and better font, this will make my magazine more attractive to the reader.  But he did say that the colour scheme is good so I will use this for my music magazine.

Iconic Signs- this is when an image or a logo actually looks like what is represent for example the sign of the cross.

Symbolic Signs- this is when a sign or logo has a meaning that must be culturally learned by the people, and example could be a men’s and ladies toilets sign on a wall.

Indexical Signs- this is when a sign or logo has a connection to what they represent and are suggestive rather than directly resembling what they represent.        

Plysemic Meaning- the way the same sign can have different meaning to different people an example could be the colour red.        

Motivated Signs- these signs can cause more or less motivation.  Losing motivation could be because the images doesn’t appeal to the person looking or may affect them. The different people could feel different because of how the image is interpretative.

The three magazines cover I’m going to compare is “Rewind Magazine Ed Sheeran Cover”, “Rolling Stone Magazine Jay-Z Cover” and “Kerrang! Magazine Green Day Cover”. The magazines are all respectable magazine, the first magazine “Rewind Magazine” is based in the UK and the UK urban Hip-Hop scene. The Cover used Ed Sheeran on the front cover has he has a new album out which will help him promote the album the colours used is red black and white the same colours on his t-shirt. This magazine it more informal and use more slang then the other two magazines.

This magazine will use more images at the article then the other to magazines. “Rolling Stone Magazine” is more formal then the other two magazines, evidence of this is the front cover of Jay-Z wearing a suit wear the other to covers.

Also the magazine it more text based then the other to with more interviews and articles. The colours are more basic and formal then the other to magazine. The last magazine is “Kerrang! Magazine” which is a rock magazine based in America. The magazine uses more images the articles and promotes more artist then the other two magazines. This magazines text is the most informal and use more slang.

The magazine is very informal and even uses slang and strong language. The quality of the written is very urban and based around slang. The magazine seems to be very humorous with different features in it. It seems to mainly promote artist and new artist with new release. The article that was based on Dizzee Rascal seems to be happy and talking about his career and what is next for him.

My content page is based on the front cover with the colours seem. The image is to show a great bishop Douglass sports stars battling against each other. The image is in black and white to show the great moment, I also put the image at the bottom so that the image doesn’t clash with the image because I feel the image it very significant.

I made a flat plan for my contents page because is give me a rough idea of how I will make my page. I base idea on the content page of “Vibes magazine the Kanye West Edition” this because I feel the image and colours use it very powerful and is very capturing.

Design

My Second DesignBecause of the theme of the magazine I made the back ground back and white because it symbolises great moments and epic moments. I made the font colour black and red because it will stand out away from the background and also I feel that it will attract read to look at the magazine. The font I used the font call ‘fat’ because i felt that is a good design that will appeal to my target market but however still formal. I added the blur effect to make the image look like is moving.The first image show the first design I made, it was all in black and white so it made it hard to read the text so I change the text to red and black so is easier to read. Then in the second image it shows how I edited the work. I added the blur effect to it then I added different articles on the side. The final image is the final design that I will use.
